Condition gaskets. Enhance cooling function and reduce high operating temperatures. Increase rotational speed and temperature range.
1. Drop the pan and do a filter change and partial fluid replacement. 2. Take it to a shop that has an automated flush machine and have all the fluid replaced, but leave the filter in. Number 2 is actually specified in the Ford Workshop Service Manual, but I like to alternate between #1 and #2 every 30K miles so I can get all the fluid changed

Any excess fluid will drain out of the transmission. If nothing drains out of the transmission, add more fluid to the transmission until it does.
